Please meet our team
My name is Joel, and I want to thank you for taking the time to read about my skills and experience, as well as how I work as a therapist.
In undertaking your search, I encourage you to hold in mind that whilst it is important that the treatment you receive is appropriate and delivered correctly, there is also a strong evidence-base demonstrating that the relationship between you and your therapist is equally, if not more, impactful on outcome. I would therefore encourage you to consider both the therapeutic approach you require, as well as the therapist characteristics that may well best assist you to feel comfortable and confident.
My experience is that I have worked in mental health for around 20 years, beginning with working as a health care assistant whilst studying my undergraduate psychology degree. Following my degree, I worked as an occupational therapy assistant in a large psychiatric hospital. This was my first introduction to talking therapies and so began the enthusiastic journey I am still undertaking today. Initially this journey led to me qualifying as a counselling psychologist in 2011. I have then gone on to work with children, adolescents and adults in services including primary care, CAMHS, employee psychology and forensic inpatient. In terms of therapeutic training, this includes – Cognitive Behavioural (CBT), Dialectical Behavioural (DBT), Trauma-Response, Flash Technique, Systemic Practice & Family Therapy, Interpersonal Psychotherapy, Neuropsychology, Dyadic Developmental Psychotherapy, Narrative, Psychodynamic and Person-Centred.
Another important influence of my approach is my interest in evidence-based relationships and what is known about the factors that increase the chances of a therapeutic encounter being a success. I use this knowledge to adapt my approach to the individual and can use it as a useful guide as to what relational factors might need attention throughout the process. A crucial factor from this research is the importance of collaboration and I attempt to embed this in all the therapeutic work I undertake, from the initial stages, throughout the sessions, and to the conclusion. There are occasions, as with all relationships, where difficulties arise and the evidence also offers guidance on how best to work together to address these in an empathic, patient and repairing manner.
I hope this has been a useful overview of how I work therapeutically and hope to meet one day – if my approach feels a good fit for you.
